Lisbon Airport automatic passport gates are never in operation

So Lisbon Airport proudly years ago installed automatic passport gates

But literally every time I’ve flown there they’re either switched off or broken down.

Meanwhile there’s crazy hours long passport lines for years too

How can you be so incompetent?

Actually had a surprisingly easy trip to Lisbon (from the US) the other day. I was expecting chaos, but here is what happened. We landed in Terminal 1 and had to take a bus. It let us off and there was a bit of chaos because there was a huge line that we thought was passport control but actually it appeared to be security for people getting into the gates. That was not well defined, but luckily we ignored that and kept walking and saw the sign for passport control. Because we were coming from the US and had digital passports, we only waited in line for about 15 mins. The e-gates were working (barely :). If you couldn’t use that line, I fear the line was incredibly long for other people. Our bags came out immediately. We were fully out of immigration and customs in under 30 mins.

We are GV holders traveling from US to Lisbon for first time since getting our residency cards. Do you have any advice for how to avoid airport problems? Thanks!

This is awful for Europeans, too: There are minimal slots for the bags to be rolled on when recovering our bags. If 90% of the flight is stuck in passport control, even the remaining 10% can’t leave until their bags arrive.

The other day, I had to wait one hour after arriving from Dubai because the plane was connecting from Japan, and everyone got stuck in passport control.

Same thing happens in Málaga airport, for over 3 years the machines are there and haven't worked once, we fly in and out of the airport at least 3 times a year
